Paulikki tote bag

The bag is made in square-shaped parts. You need 40 square parts to make the bag. Join the square parts together with a single crochet seam, or sew them together by hand. Work the separate bottom part back and forth in solid color, and sew it in place. The top edge is finished with a single crochet and slip stitch border.

START

Rnd 1. Make a yarn loop in green yarn, close loop with a sl st. Work 2 ch, work 11 dc in the loop. Carry the yarn tail inside the sts. At the end of the round, pull yarn tail tight to close the hole. Close round with a sl st.

Rnd 2. Work 3 ch, work 1 dc in the same st. Work 2 dc in each st (24 dc). Close round with a sl st.

Rnd 3. Work 3 ch, work 2 dc in every second st, 1 dc in the other sts (36 dc). Close round with a sl st.

Rnd 4. Grab the natural white yarn in the work, leave a 1 m long yarn tail. Work 1 ch in natural white yarn and 1 sc in the same st, work 2 sc in every third st, 1 sc in other sts (48 sc). Close round with a sl st.

Rnd 5. Petals. In this round, work the stitches in the front loop of the st. *Take a yoh, skip two sts, work 9 dc in the same st, skip two sts, work sl st*, repeat *-* until the end of the round (8 petals). Close round with a sl st.

Rnd 6. Change to green yarn. In this round, work in the back loop of the st from rnd 4.  Work 1 ch and 1 sc in the same st, *work 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 dc, 2 tdc in the same st, 3 ch, 2 tdc in the following st, 1 dc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 sc*, repeat *-* 4 times altogether. Close round with a sl st.

Rnd 7. Work 3 ch, *work 7 dc, 2 dc + 3 ch + 2 dc in the chains, 7 dc*, repeat *-* until end of the round (at the end work 6 dc). Close round with a sl st.

Rnd 8. Work 1 ch and 1 sc in the same st, grab the natural white yarn in the work, *work 2 sc, change to natural white yarn, work 7 sc, 5 sc in the chains, 7 sc, change to green yarn, work 2 sc*, repeat *-* until end of the round. Close round with a sl st.

Cut yarns and weave in ends.

Work a sl st round between rounds 3 and 4 with the natural white yarn tail. The sl st round will be visible in the right side of the work.

Work 40 similar square parts.

BOTTOM PART

Row 1. Work 97 ch in natural white yarn, turn, work 1 ch in the second ch from the hook. Work 1 sc in each st (96 sc).

Rows 2 - 24. Work 1 ch, turn, work 2 sc in each st. Work 24 rows altogether. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Sew the bottom piece in place.

To reinforce the top edge of the bag, work 2 sc rounds and one sl st round. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

FINISHING

Steam or block the square parts in shape. Join the parts together with a single crochet seam or sew them together by hand. The size of the bag is 4 square parts in height, and 10 square parts in diameter. In this work, the square parts are crocheted together with sc seam. The seam is hidden inside the work and taking only one loop of each st in the hook.

Sew the handles in place by hand. Cut lining and sew it in place by hand.
